Panther Pride

Well, it seems as though Panther fans were not the only ones keeping a close eye, or ear to the UWM Women’s Basketball team, so was the Horizon League. Both Head Coach Kyle Rechlicz and Sophomore Forward – Steph Kostowicz received end of the year accolades.

Introduction of new Women’s Basketball head coach Kyle Rechlicz 2007.

Head Coach Kyle Rechlicz, in her fourth season managed to squelch critics and lead her team to a second place finish in the Horizon League which in turn earned her Coach of the Year honors. She joins Sandy Botham who also received the honor in 2005-06, as the ONLY two UWM Women Coaches to do so.
The  second place finish was impressive considering the Women finished in second to last in the conference last year and were projected to do the same again this year. What Rechlicz did however was put together the  first winning season for the program in 10 years, finishing 12-6 in the conference, and 18- 11 over-all. During the season her team put together two 5 game win streaks, and managed to sweep 6 out of the other 9 teams in their conference.

(The Panthers are only the THIRD team ever in the history of the Horizon League to have such a turn around in back to back seasons)

There is also a solid chance for her team to participate in a post season tournament, something that they have also been absent from for a decade.

Steph Kostowicz

One of the reasons for the turn around was the other Horizon League award winner from UWM, Sophomore, Steph Kostowicz.  Koskowicz may have been #32 on the floor, was #1 in the eyes of the Horizon League  voters, and was named First-Team All-Horizon League.

Koskowitz, who spent most of her freshman year sidelined with injury shined in her first full season on the hard wood. She led her team in rebounding, blocked shots, field goal percentage, and scoring. In those same categories league wise, she was fourth in rebounding (8.9), fourth in blocks (1.4), sixth in field goal percentage (.536) and 11th in scoring (13.8). She also posted seven “double-doubles” this season, and was named Horizon League Player of the Week twice.

When congratulated about the achievements by both her and Steph, Rechlicz replied “Pretty exciting, especially for Steph, only sophomore on First Team, really proud of her.”

CONGRATULATIONS, Coach Kyle Rechlicz and Stephanie Kostowicz!

Don’t even think about it Barry….
