Clean Sweep X 2

Break out the grills, brats, and beer Milwaukee the Boys of Summer, or should I say Spring are coming home with a 7-2 record, and a 6 game winning streak to boot, after sweeping back to back series in Boston and Philly.

The 7-2 record is their best since 1998, the only time they went 8-2 or better was in 1987, the “Year of the Streak” when the Crew went 13-0 (to start the season) and we all feasted on free George Webb hamburgers after win number 12. As far as the 6 in a row, their longest winning streak prior to this one was last season when they won 9 in a row between 4/14 – 4/23.

The Brewers improved their record by downing the Phillies Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park 6-2 win, slapping out 11 hits in the process. It was the first time in franchise history they swept the Phillies since becoming permanent resident of the N.L. in 1998.

Marco Estrada got his first win of the season pitching 6 quality innings, giving up only 2 runs, while allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and striking out 6. Marco worked his way through what could have been a disastrous 6th inning getting Domonic Brown to fly out with the bases loaded and 2 out. The Brewer bullpen took it from there closing it out with Will Smith, Tyler Thornburg, and Francisco Rodriguez.

As far as the offense is going….it’s GOING….Carlos Gomez is continuing to make the Brewer Brass look like geniuses with 3 more hits last night in the lead off spot, which included a triple and 2 singles resulting in 1 run scored and a RBI. Gomez and is now batting .390. The Crew roughed up Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee during his 6 innings, and dealt him his first loss of the season.

The Brewers are definitely playing with confidence, and that’s exactly what winning does. Winning breeds winning. Not to mix apples and oranges but former Green Bay Packer head coach Vince Lombardi said it best:

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”

The Brewers come home tonight for first of six games, 3 against the Pirates, and 3 versus their long time nemesis, the Cardinals, both teams went to the playoffs last year. Wily Peralta takes the mound tonight, first pitch 7:10.
