Familiar Foes

Death, Taxes and the Warhawks taking on the Purple Raiders in the Stagg Bowl is something that can be counted on year in and year out (as of late).

Such is the case again this year, when the Warhawks of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater take on the Purple Raiders of Mount Union out of Alliance, Ohio. The game can be seen Friday (12-20-13) at 6pm CST on ESPNU in Salem, Virginia.

Warhawk Head Coach, Lance Leipold led his team to 7-0 in conference play (WIAC), and 14-0 overall, while improving his seven year record as head coach to an insane 93-6! Mount Union, and their Head Coach Vince Kehres enter the Championship game finishing conference play at 9-0 (OAC) and 14-0 overall.

Whitewater will be sporting an offensive line that doesn’t include one senior, but does include two true freshman… While, Purple Raider QB Kevin Burke won the Division III equivilant of the Heisman…the Gagliard Trophy, this season.

These two programs are no strangers to one another, they have faced off in the Championship seven times from 2005 through 2011. Mount Union won the Championship in 2005, 06,and 08, while Whitewater was crowned Division III Champion in 2007, 09, 10 and 11.  Mount Union won it all again in 2012 defeating St. Thomas (Minnesota) in the Championship.

Here are the results of their games:

2005 Mount Union 35-28 Whitewater

2006 Mount Union 35-16 Whitewater

2007 Whitewater  31-21 Mount Union

2008 Mount Union 31-26 Whiterwater

2009 Whitewater 38-28 Mount Union

2010 Whitewater 31-21 Mount Union

2011 Whitewater 13-10 Mount Union

The fact that these two teams have faced off against each other as much as they have is incredible considering that there are 244 Division III football programs across the U.S.

For the record this will be Mount Union’s 17th appearance in the Championship, and Whitewater’s 8th, in the 40 year history of the DIII Championship (1973).

  1. It is amazing how the two schools run the table each year to meet in the Stagg Bowl. I wonder what kind of “extras” the players are getting from these D-III schools? GO WARHAWKS!
