and a bottle of Rum! It’s a Pirate Party…and YES I wanna be a Pirate! Fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates are partying like it’s 1992 and may even party like it’s 1979 when the season is all said and done.
Growing up in Milwaukee in the 1970’s I was of course a Brewer fan, but they were in the American League at the time so I needed to have a team to cheer for in the National League, and I just so happened to pick the Pirates. So I have a special place in my heart for the Pirates eventhough they’re now iin the same division as the Crew.
For those who are not familiar with what seems like ancient history, 1979 was the last time Pittsburgh were in, and won the World Series. It wasn’t easy, Willie Stargell and “Family” had to come back from a 3 games to 1 and had to snatch the crown from Baltimore.
Back to present day 2013 where Andrew McCutchen and Co. are playing some of the best ball in years…hell decades! It’s been 21 years, basically a generation since the Pirates finished a season over .500, which they are guaranteed to do this season. They are currently in first place in the N.L.Central with the best record in baseball 65-42, (23 games over .500 first time since 1972). The last time The Iron City Nine were in first place this late in the season was in 1992, which was also the last year they finished over .500, and made the playoffs!
The Pirates have been building this team for some time now and did NOT “buy” like others in the past (Yankees, Marlins, and Blue Jays to name a few), their run is legit. Guys like Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker, A.J. Burnett and Franciso Liriano are some of the players that have helped Pittsburgh fly under the radar so far.
The Pirates have definitely paid their dues suffering through a 105 losses in 2010, teasing their fans and MLB in both 2011 and 2012 with stints of success, spending some time in first before “walking the plank” and missing the playoffs.
There are now 2 Wild Card spots available in both leagues, which in essence give the Bucs an extra chance at getting into the post season…which I feel they will… the drought is over “Maties.” The way they are playing they will not only make the playoffs, they won’t need the Wild Card, since they should to win the N.L.Central outright. If for some reason they NEED the Wild Card to get in, oh well…all a team needs to do is get to the Playoffs, and anything can happen.
Break out you 45’s of “We Are Family” Pirate Fans…this is your year!
