For the first time since 1964 the Mets will host the mid-summer classic, and Milwaukee’s Dominican Duo will be there! Jean Segura and Carlos Gomez are headed to the Big Apple as reserves on this year’s squad, but could very easily been starters.
Segura had missed the outright starting nod at Shortstop to Colorado’s Troy Tuluwiskit, who believe it or not has missed most of the season, recovering from a broken rib and won’t be back in commission until after the break. That being noted, Segura might very well start the game, his numbers so far this season are definitely All-Star caliber. In 83 games he has posted a .322 batting average, 11 homeruns, 33 rbi, 26 stolen bases, and crossed the plate himself 49 times. He is also the only player in MLB with 10+ hrs and 25+ stolen bases, he was also named NL player of the week for 5/6-5/12.
The Brewers will field another player, an outfielder… and he’s not named Ryan Braun. Brewers centerfielder Carlos Gomez, will be making his first appearance in an All-Star game as well. Carlos was chosen by N.L. manager Bruce Bochy as a reserve, but his numbers are definitely worthy of a starting role. Gomez will likely see playing time, because of what his speed and glove bring to the game. Go-Go’s numbers at the plate: .319 batting average, 13 round-trippers, 41 rbi, 18 stolen bases and has also made his run count 49 times this season. He leads the MLB in triples with 9, and was also named MLB player of the week (4/15-4/21) this season so far.
The way that Segura and Gomez are playing, I would be willing to bet that one if not both of them will have a hand in an NL victory… and, if the timing is right one of them may take home the All Star Game MVP trophy!
Good luck boys and CONGRATULATIONS! Remember it is a game, so stay loose and have some fun, just like you have so far here for the Crew!
