It’s hard to catch lighting in a bottle once, let alone twice, but, that’s exactly what the powers that be at UW-Madison thought when they picked up Maryland quarterback transfer Danny O’Brien as their starter for the 2012 season.
Last year the Badgers got lucky with Russell Wilson (who is now the starter in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks) who they picked up when he transferred from N.C. State. Arguable the best quarterback the Badgers have ever had (at least for one season).
Head Coach Brett Bielema started O’Brien at the beginning of the season like planned, then replaced him with Whitnall High Schools Joel Stave a few games later. Stave will be out for the rest of the season after suffering a broken collar-bone during the Michigan State game. Bielema is NOT going back to O’Brien, but to fifth year senior Curt Phillips whose career at UW consists of 12 career passes!
So, what’s up with O’Brien? Wouldn’t a coach want to go back to his highly touted transfer who was once the ACC Rookie of the Year, when the chance to get back to the Big Ten Championship is on the line this week when the Badgers travel to Indiana?
I guess there may be a reason O’Brien was alienated by Maryland’s head coach Randy Edsell, and transfered…maybe his “demons” followed him to Mad-City.
